Spotted eagle ray

Description: Small white spots or rings on dark blue to black disc-shaped body, white below. Rounded snout and square shaped head. Long whip-like tail with two to six spines at base.

Size: Disc width from 0.5 to over 2.3 m (1.6-7.5 ft).

Habitat, behaviour and biology: Occurs over reefs, along drop-offs, in bays, and open water, from the surface to at least 30 m (100 ft). Solitary and in small groups. Feeds in the sand on ishes, bivalves, snails, shrimp, octopi, and sea urchins. Ovoviviparous; one to four young per litter. Shy. Leaps from the water; reported to have landed in small boats and accidently injured occupants.

Descripción: Pequeños lunares o anillos blancos sobre el cuerpo azul oscuro a negro, con forma de disco; blanco debajo. Hocico redondeado y cabeza cuadrada. Cola larga con forma de látigo, con dos a seis aguijones en la base.

Tamaño: Ancho del disco desde 0,5 m hasta más de 2,3 m (1,6-7,5 pies).

Hábitat, comportamiento y biología: Se encuentra sobre arrecifes, escarpaduras, bahías y en mar abierto, desde la superficie hasta por lo menos 30 m (100 pies) de profundidad. Solitario o en grupos pequeños. Se alimenta en la arena de peces, bivalvos, caracoles, camarones, pulpos y erizos de mar. Ovovivíparo; de 1 a 4 crías por camada. Tímido. Brinca en el agua; se conocen casos en que ha caído en botes pequeños y herido accidentalmente a sus ocupantes.

Beschreibung: Kleine weiße Stellen oder Ringe auf einem dunkelblauen bis schwarzen Körper, scheibenförmiger Körper; unten weiß. Runde Schnauze und quadratischer Kopf; lange peitschenförmige Flossen, mit zwei bis sechs Stacheln am Anfang.

Größe: Scheibenbreite von 0,5 bis über 2,3 m (1,6-7,5 ft).

Lebensraum, Verhalten und Biologie: Findet sich über Riffen, Abhängen, in Buchten und im offenen Meer, von der Oberfläche bis zu 30 m (100 ft). Alleine oder in kleinen Gruppen. Ernährt sich von Fischen, Muscheln, Schnecken, Krabben, Kraken und Seeigeln im Sand. Eilegend; 1 bis 4 Junge pro Wurf. Schüchtern. Hüpft im Wasser; es sind Fälle bekannt wo er in kleinen Booten landete und die Insassen verletzte.
